This winter, Signature Theatre re-invents the blockbuster musical Les Misérables. Based on Victor Hugo's 1862 classic novel, this beloved show is a sweeping, uplifting, epic saga that has thrilled audiences throughout the world. The fugitive Jean Valjean is pitted against the tenacious Inspector Javert in a lifelong struggle to evade capture; their high-stakes conflict is a deeply personal tale set brought to vivid life against a historical backdrop of unparalleled scale. Packed with show-stopping musical numbers like “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” and “One Day More,” this brand-new production features a 28-member cast and a 14-piece orchestra, all in Signature’s intimate, 280-seat black box theater. This promises to be the musical experience of a lifetime!

BEYOND THE BARRICADE: CREATING LES MISÉRABLES AT SIGNATURE
Take a Special Backstage Tour and discover the world of Signature’s Les Misérables. The 45-minute backstage tour gives you a peek at the rehearsal process, costumes, and set design of this megamusical. You’ll also be entered into a raffle to see the show from backstage at a future performance. Tours are Saturdays and Sundays at 5:15pm in the Mead Lobby. Tickets are $15 per person, and there is limited availability.

Alain Boublil (Conception, Book, and Original French Lyrics) Author of La Révolution Française (1793), Les Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996), all in collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg. He holds two Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Book, two Grammy Awards® (Les Misérables), Evening Standard Drama Award (Miss Saigon), Laurence Olivier Award (Martin Guerre). He is the author of the play The Diary of Adam and Eve (based upon short stories by Mark Twain) and the prize-winning French novel Les dessous de soi. Les Misérables re-opened on Broadway in November 2006, the same year in which he created his newest musical, The Pirate Queen, in America (Broadway, 2007).

Claude-Michel Schönberg (Composer) began his career as a singer, writer, and producer of popular songs. He wrote the musical score of La Révolution Française, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, and Martin Guerre. He also supervised overseas productions of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon and co-produced several international cast albums of his shows. In 2001 he composed his first ballet score, Wuthering Heights, which was created by the Northern Ballet Theatre in September 2002. His newest show with Alain Boublil, The Pirate Queen, was his sixth complete score.

Herbert Kretzmer (Lyricist) was a fulltime London journalist when Cameron Mackintosh invited him to join the Les Misérables team preparing for the show’s West End production in 1985. A part-time songwriter, he contributed regular lyrics for the BBC’s famous satire series That Was the Week That Was and had also written lyrics for the French singer Charles Aznavour ( and had also written lyrics for the French singer Charles Aznavour (Yesterday When I Was Young, She, etc.). It was Kretzmer’s work with Aznavour which led to Cameron’s invitation. .

John Cameron (Original Orchestrations) was responsible for the original orchestral scores of Les Misérables in Paris and London and conducted the French album. He has some 40 film score credits, including A Touch of Class (Academy Award nomination), Kes, The Ruling Class, The Mirror Crack’d, and Black Beauty, and TV scores including The Young Visitors and Marlowe, Private Eye. He has arranged and written songs for Ella Fitzgerald, Jose Carreras, Hot Chocolate, Heat Wave, and his band CSC. Other orchestral scores include Mutiny, Blondel, The Beaux’ Stratagem, Man is Man.
